After a fun and enlightening trip to
Petrosains, located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, I was told of a specific mission before entering. I was to discover and explore the possibilities of the relation between the two words,
Power and
Representation, and to be inspired by what I experienced, then write an article based on that. What I saw the most at Petrosains based on these words was power, in any form, being put to use to educate, and what most people do not realise is that power, or rather energy to be more accurate, can not be created or destroyed, merely transformed (yes I did realise this long before the Transformers movie so don't get on my case).
So my point and relation to my given topic is of course, power being represented in other forms, invisible energies transformed into a visible representation or inert materials combined to create new and more useful power, seen by their representation, their reactions and the culmination of an intended (or not) byproduct. The result used to our advantage be it to
assist,
educate or
entertain.
A few examples I can recall off the top of my head is the power of sound waves affecting metal rings which vibrate so we can
see sound, or an electric tube which flows electricity through your body so when you touch a light bulb it lights up so that you can
feel light, or even a device which when you interact with it, it reads radiation levels so you can
hear radiation. Creating representations for such powers allows humans to interact with energies in ways which would have been otherwise impossible and what humans can interact with humans can learn to control and use. The best and most appropriate example is petroleum. Things died millions of years ago and turned into a black sludge. This turned out to be a powerful source of fuel, stored power in a new form and used by humans (though we really should stop).
The importance of the representation of such powers is understood when you realise the
dangers or
benefits that exist in our universe and how much we have yet to learn. There is so much stuff we cannot see, hear, touch, taste or smell yet it exists. If we cannot discover these powers, detect, measure and calculate them, what would we do when we unknowingly encounter them?
Power is everything. Being in the information age gives us the privilege to be the ones to discover and control many of these powers but what will we do once we gain control. What does the representation of such invisible powers mean for us?
